An excerpt from Dave's obituary:

On March 9, 2025, the legal profession lost an icon when former King County Chief Deputy Criminal Prosecutor and Professor David Boerner, 85, passed away peacefully in Mercer Island, Washington. David followed his beloved wife, Barbara, who passed just three months before him.

A distinguished prosecutor, professor, legal scholar, and champion of social justice, Dave was a mentor, educator, advocate, father, grandfather, and loving husband whose impact will be felt for generations.

As a prosecutor, Dave helped modernize Washington's legal system, played a key role on the Norm Maleng-led taskforce that shaped the Community Protection Act and the Sexually Violent Predators Statute, spearheaded the Sentencing Guidelines Commission, and advised the state Supreme Court, Bar Association, and other judicial bodies. His contributions earned widespread state and national recognition, cementing his legacy as a leader in criminal justice reform.

As a professor, Dave was deeply committed to professional integrity, teaching courses in criminal law, criminal procedure, evidence, and professional responsibility. One of his most enduring contributions was co-founding the Academic Resource Center's Access Admission Program, where he helped more than 1,000 aspiring lawyers overcome barriers to legal education, fostering a more diverse and just profession. His students didn't just gain legal knowledge — they carried forward his unwavering commitment to ethics, equity, and justice.

Dave Boerner exemplified the highest values of his profession — humanity, humility, excellence, ethics, integrity, and advocacy. His unwavering passion for justice and education left an indelible mark on the legal community and on the careers of so many who have reached out after his passing. He will be remembered by all for his dedication to making the criminal justice system more just.

He is survived by: his children Judy, Dan, and Rich, and their spouses; six grandchildren; colleagues; students; and a grateful legal profession that will carry forward his legacy. Dave's children deeply mourn the recent passing of both their parents but they take comfort in knowing that Dave and Barb are together again in their final Pleasant Valley resting place.

Regulating the Machine:

Law, Liability, Innovation, and the Future of AI-Driven Medicine

A conversation with Radiologist and Lunit Global Medical Director Dr. Christopher Austin

Healthcare in the US and globally is facing unprecedented headwinds, including rising costs, variable access, increasing consumer expectations, and growing concerns about clinician burnout. Artificial intelligence is frequently positioned as a potential solution to many of these operational and clinical challenges. Yet the adoption of AI remains limited, with industry innovation facing significant barriers of its own, particularly legal, regulatory, and policy challenges.

With roughly 75% of all FDA-cleared AI medical devices focused on diagnostic imaging, radiology has become the proving ground for many of the complex legal and regulatory questions surrounding the adoption and scaling of artificial intelligence in healthcare. These include issues related to liability, data governance, reimbursement, clinical accountability, and patient safety.

At the same time, rapid advances in computing power, foundation models, and data are accelerating innovation far faster than existing regulatory frameworks were designed to accommodate. The result is a growing tension between technological capability, patient protection, and legal oversight.

Join Seattle University of Law Professor Chryssa Deliganis for a conversation with Dr. Christopher Austin, MD, Radiologist and Global Medical Director at Lunit, who has been working at the forefront of artificial intelligence in diagnostic imaging since its emergence into clinical medicine in 2016. Together, they will explore how AI is reshaping the practice of medicine and how the evolving legal and regulatory environment is influencing which technologies reach patients, how they are deployed, and who bears responsibility when they fail.

About Dr. Christopher Austin

Dr. Christopher Austin is a UK-trained radiologist based in Seattle with nearly a decade of experience working at the intersection of artificial intelligence, diagnostic imaging, and clinical adoption. Since 2016, he has led development, validation, regulatory strategy, and commercialization efforts for AI-enabled imaging technologies. He has held senior leadership roles at GE Healthcare, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Kheiron Medical, and RadNet, and has advised multiple startups focused on the responsible deployment of clinical AI technologies.

In addition to his industry work, Dr. Austin has served as an advisor to the Scottish Government on AI in healthcare, contributing to national discussions on regulation, patient safety, and large-scale adoption of AI in clinical settings.

Starting at 1pm, there will be an artist talk with Erin Elyse Burns. Join us as she shares more information about her innovative exhibition, and answer questions from the audience.

About the Exhibition

Dead Reckoning brings together lens-based works that investigate the paternal side of Erin Elyse Burns’s ancestral heritage. From this position, her work considers how gender, work, immigration, incarnation, and war between nation states inform identity.

From visiting regional archives in the rural North of Ireland where paternal family originates, to navigating the National Archives of England, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, Burns has found the unearthing of information to be both an exercise in fact finding from primary source material and one of engaging with porous myths and untold stories. Time spent in the archives introduces complex inquiry into the gatekeeping of information and the particular barriers required to access historical objects.

In Dead Reckoning, Burns responds to and abstracts this material to consider the archetypal nature of roles played within her family. She uses repetitive physical movements to embody, remember, and release actions her family has performed. These gestures posit that somatic awareness has the ability to relinquish intergenerational trauma. This embodiment questions distinctions of female and male, young and old, past and present. These binaries blend, dissolve, and are interwoven with ideas of the mystical. While the impetus of the work is personal and specific, the content offers viewers a mirror to reflect on their own histories.

Artist Bio

Erin Elyse Burns is a lens-based artist whose practice operates at the intersection of photography, video, and performance. Frequently positioning herself as both subject and author, Burns creates images and time-based works that oscillate between the picturesque, the vulnerable, and the absurd. Preoccupied with the dual role of seeing and being seen, her work probes the tension between distanced scrutiny and inherent intimacy. Themes of identity, ritual, loss, consciousness, and ephemerality recur throughout her practice.

Burns has exhibited nationally and internationally at institutions including the Tucson Museum of Art, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Henry Art Gallery, and the Nevada Museum of Art, Reno. Recent solo exhibitions include SOIL Art Gallery (Seattle, WA), EWU Gallery of Art at Eastern Washington University (Cheney, WA), and Gallery 4Culture (Seattle, WA). Recent group exhibitions include Carnation Contemporary (Portland, OR) and Tlaxcala3 (Mexico City). Her artist residencies include Two Dot Schoolhouse Studios (Montana), Vermont Studio Center, and the Westfjords Residency in northern Iceland. Burns has received grants from 4Culture, the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture, and The New Foundation Seattle, and was a Fulbright Arts Finalist. She is an Associate Professor at Cornish College of the Arts at Seattle University.

Each speaker will offer a brief presentation on their current practice, followed by a moderated panel discussion.

The panel will provide insights into real‑world professional practice, current industry trends, and cross‑disciplinary collaboration. This event will be especially relevant for students in Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, and related engineering majors, as well as faculty, staff, and SU community members interested in sustainability, architecture, or interdisciplinary work within the built environment.

Digital humanities is an interdisciplinary field that combines humanistic inquiry with digital tools to transform how we study culture, language, history, and society. From digital archives and multilingual publishing to data-driven cultural analysis, the field is reshaping research, teaching, and public scholarship worldwide.

The Roundglass India Center & Technology Ethics Initiative invite students and faculty to explore this rapidly evolving space through a special lecture by Professor Nirmala Menon, an internationally recognized leader in digital humanities.

Professor Menon is Chair Professor at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Indian Institute of Technology Indore, where she leads the Digital Humanities and Publishing Research Group and is Chair of the JPN National Centre of Excellence in the Humanities. She also serves as an Affiliate Research Professor at the University of Oxford and is currently a Fulbright Fellow at Northeastern University (2025–26). Her scholarship spans postcolonial studies, digital humanities, and multilingual knowledge systems, with a sustained focus on decolonizing global knowledge infrastructures.

Dr. Menon's Talk: Digital Knowledge Infrastructures and Digital Humanities Projects: Intersections and Challenges

In this timely talk, Professor Menon examines the uneven and evolving trajectory of digital humanities (DH) in India and the broader research ecosystem. She explores the skepticism and resistance the field sometimes encounters—including concerns about distancing from core humanities questions or borrowing the rhetoric of STEM for legitimacy—while making the case that DH is far more than its critiques.

Professor Menon argues that humanities scholars must actively harness, interrogate, and shape digital technologies to ensure that enduring humanistic questions remain central to technological development and deployment. Drawing on major initiatives—including Project KSHIP at IIT Indore, the DST-sponsored SINDHU project, the Electronic Literature from India anthology, and the work of Open Access India—she highlights efforts to decolonize knowledge systems, expand multilingual scholarship, and make research more accessible and equitable.

The talk will also address the continuing structural challenges facing humanities research infrastructures and invite conversation about the future of digital scholarship in global and Indian contexts.

Students, faculty, and researchers interested in digital scholarship, global humanities, publishing, technology and society, and South Asia are especially encouraged to attend.

Cornish Dance Theater is a bi-annual production where guest choreographers are invitied to devise pieces in collaboration with Cornish student dancers. This Spring, we are pleased to announce that our two guest choreographers are Cornish Faculty members, Nia-Amina Minor and Cameo Lethem.

About Nia-Amina Minor

Nia-Amina Minor is a movement artist, choreographer, curator, and educator originally from Los Angeles. Her work focuses on the body and what it carries using physical and archival research to converse with memory. She approaches her practice as an imaginative space grounded in rhythm where improvisation and choreography meet. Nia-Amina has received regional and national commissions for her choreographic and film work and has a working background as a performer and dramaturg. She is co-founder of Black Collectivity, a collaborative project that curates and creates movement-based experiences that celebrate memory and culture.

As a performer, Nia-Amina has worked with artists such as dani tirrell, Zoe Juniper, Will Rawls, Alice Gosti, Keyes Wiley, and Amy O’Neal. From 2016-2021 she was a Company Artist at Spectrum Dance Theater under the direction of Donald Byrd. Nia-Amina has also provided dramaturgical assistance to choreographers Jade Solomon-Curtis and Donald Byrd. In her work as a curator, she has developed programming at On the Boards, Wa Na Wari, Velocity, and Base, and Friends of the Waterfront Park. From 2014-2016, she was a co-founder and curator of Los Angeles based collective, No)one Art House. As an educator, she has taught, guest lectured, and been a visiting artist at Cornish College, University of Minnesota, CalArts, University of Washington, Western Washington University, Saddleback College, Cypress College, and UC Irvine. Nia-Amina received her MFA in Dance from UC Irvine and a BA from Stanford University. She was Dance Magazine's 25 Artists to Watch in 2021, and one of Seattle Magazine's Most Influential People in 2025. Nia-Amina is currently on faculty at Cornish College of the Arts at Seattle University and is the Curating Artist in Residence at Velocity Dance Theater.

About Cameo Lethem

Cameo is a choreographer and performer based in Seattle. Her work has been shown at On the Boards, Velocity Dance Center, Erickson Theater, 12th Ave Arts, Kirkland Performance Center, Base: Experimental Arts + Space, Yaw Theater, Electric Lodge, and more. She has performed works by Alice Gosti, Annie Franklin, Bebe Miller, Beth Twigs, Chartreuse Coleman, Doug Varone, Kate Wallich, Robert Moses, and others. Her mentors from Ellenore Scott’s The Breaking Glass Project were Nia-Amina Minor and Sidra Bell. Cameo is a recipient of SeattleDances’ 2017 DanceCrush award. She received her MFA from the University of Washington.

In this academic public lecture, Professor Sawhney will examine India’s clean energy transition through the lens of sustainability, economic growth, and energy security in a developing-economy context. As one of the world’s fastest-growing economies and home to nearly 1.5 billion people, India faces the complex challenge of expanding energy access while reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable development.

The lecture will explore India’s renewable energy policies, its experience with tradeable clean energy credits, and emerging approaches to carbon pricing within its broader development strategy. Attendees will gain insight into how policy design, market mechanisms, and international trade intersect with climate goals in developing countries.

The lecture will be followed by a moderated Q&A session. This event is open to students, faculty, researchers, policy professionals, and members of the public interested in climate policy, sustainable development, and global energy transitions.

China and India: Conflict and Cooperation in the (De)Globalization Era

The relations between Asian giants China and India have been characterized by a mixture of conflict and cooperation. Since the 1962 territorial dispute, there have been intermittent flare-ups with no clear end in sight. However, India and China seem to agree on many issues such as trade, global financial reforms and climate change. This talk explores the multifaceted causes of the peculiar contours of this “managed rivalry.” A broad range of topics such as territory dispute, status, resources, conceptions of regional and world order, strategic culture, balance of power and deterrence strategies will be analyzed. The mitigating role of asymmetrical economic interdependence adopted by the two states as well as their common membership in institutions such as BRICS, SCO and G20 have helped periodic crises from escalating into wars. The China-India relationship is likely to shape 21st century international politics and the Indo-Pacific regional order profoundly.

Pending approval, 7.25 hours of professional development WSBA CLE Credit per APR 11(f)(3) and a certificate for 8-hours of continuing education will be awarded for registrants who participate in the entire event.

If you are a member of WSBA, you are required to include your WSBA Bar number at registration to receive WSBA MCLE Credits. When logging in on the day of the program, you will need to use your correct full name to receive credit. Attendance time will be recorded for each participant and the total number of minutes you attend will be added up at the end of the program. As the sponsoring party, we will submit all MCLE credits at the conclusion of the event. It will take approximately 3 weeks to post the credits to all individual accounts. If you would like to receive CE Credits for another professional association, a certificate of completion ill be provided to all participants who complete the entire 8-hour program that participants can submit to their respective associations for credit. All participants who complete the 8-hour training will receive a certificate of completion.

Taking place May 15, 2026 at Pigott Auditorium at Seattle University, this year’s conference will explore how emerging technologies are reshaping energy systems and security landscapes while raising important ethical and policy questions.

From innovations in energy infrastructure and cybersecurity to the role of artificial intelligence in critical systems, speakers will examine how technological change affects resilience, governance, equity and public trust.

Meet the Speakers

Panel 1: Cybersecurity

Lope Barrero

Lope Barrero is a Full Professor of Engineering at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá and currently a visiting scholar at Seattle University. Trained as an Industrial Engineer with an ScD in Environmental Health Sciences from Harvard University, his research focuses on human factors and ergonomics, examining how people interact with complex systems and how design affects safety, wellbeing and performance.

His recent work explores human factors, artificial intelligence and immersive technologies in high-stakes, time-constrained environments. He studies Human–AI interaction in settings such as cybersecurity operations centers and control rooms for essential industries, with particular attention to trust, workload and accountability.

He has served as Chair of Industrial Engineering and Dean of Engineering at Javeriana, leading digital transformation, curriculum innovation and gender equity initiatives in STEM.

Scott M. Giordano, Esq., AIGP, FIP, CISSP, CCSP

Scott M. Giordano is an attorney with more than 25 years of experience in legal, technology and risk management consulting. An IAPP Fellow of Information Privacy and AI Governance Professional, Certified Information Systems Security Professional and Certified Cloud Security Professional, he co-founded The CISO Law Firm PLLC, which represents CISOs and cybersecurity leaders.

Previously, Scott served as General Counsel of Spirion LLC, where he led work on multinational data protection and its intersection with technology, export compliance and information governance. He also established global privacy programs for major organizations and held senior roles in legal technology firms.

He is co-inventor on a patent for intelligent searching of electronically stored information and taught the first law school course on electronic evidence and e-discovery. Scott is admitted to practice in Washington, California and the District of Columbia.

Ryan Molyneaux

Ryan Molyneaux is a Senior Technical Program Manager and Secure Future Initiative Lead at Microsoft, where she leads scalable and auditable programs that operationalize security and AI safety requirements.

She brings experience from high-stakes technology environments, including work supporting autonomous vehicle initiatives at Google and learning systems at ETS and Pearson. She partners across engineering, research, security and compliance teams to align technical execution with rigorous standards for security, privacy and governance, helping accelerate AI safety and remediation efforts across complex systems.

Panel 2: Material Science

Julie Peacock

Julie Peacock is a strategic energy advisor specializing in the regulatory and technical frameworks needed to integrate large new electrical loads onto legacy grids. With more than 15 years of experience across the U.S. Department of Energy, Bonneville Power Administration and state regulation, she focuses on enabling large-load integration for data centers and electrified fleets in constrained markets.

Currently on loan from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Julie advises DOE and the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation on national initiatives to unlock grid capacity for high-growth infrastructure, helping bridge AI-driven energy demand with utility reliability.

Grayson Shor

Grayson Shor is a battery and critical minerals circularity expert with more than a decade of experience scaling sustainability programs across five continents. He is Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer of Buckstop, an AI-driven critical minerals urban mining company, and Founder and Executive Director of the Pacific Northwest Battery Collaborative.

Previously, Grayson led Amazon Worldwide Operations’ battery sustainability and circular economy program, serving more than 1.2 million employees across 20 countries. His background spans roles as a U.S. diplomat, environmental intelligence briefer, humanitarian aid worker and entrepreneur. He has contributed to more than 200 U.S. government sustainability policy documents and lectures on climate security at Georgetown University.

Dr. Hansi Singh

Dr. Hansi Singh is Co-Founder and CEO of Planette AI, a venture-backed environmental forecasting startup based in San Francisco. She holds a PhD in atmospheric sciences and an MS in applied mathematics from the University of Washington and is a recipient of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Computational Sciences Graduate Fellowship and the Linus Pauling Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship.

Before founding Planette, she served on the faculty at the University of Victoria’s School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, where her research focused on coupled climate dynamics and polar sensitivity.

Panel 3: Geopolitics and Technology

Saadia Pekkanen

Saadia Pekkanen is the Job and Gertrud Tamaki Endowed Professor of International Studies and Adjunct Professor of Political Science and Law at the University of Washington. She is founding director of the Program on Strategy, Policy and Diplomacy Research and the Space Law, Data and Policy Program. Her research focuses on outer space security, diplomacy and international affairs, with particular expertise on Japan and Asia.

She is co-editor of The Oxford Handbook of Space Security and a special issue on space diplomacy. She holds master’s degrees from Columbia University and Yale Law School and a doctorate in political science from Harvard University. She is an elected member of the International Institute of Space Law and a lifetime member of the Council of Foreign Relations.

M. V. Ramana

M. V. Ramana is the Simons Chair in Disarmament, Global and Human Security and Professor at the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs at the University of British Columbia. He is the author of Nuclear is Not the Solution: The Folly of Atomic Power in the Age of Climate Change and other books on nuclear energy and policy.

He is a member of the International Panel on Fissile Materials, the International Nuclear Risk Assessment Group and the team behind the annual World Nuclear Industry Status Report. His honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Leo Szilard Award from the American Physical Society.

Swati Srivastava

Swati Srivastava is Associate Professor of Political Science and University Faculty Scholar at Purdue University, Faculty Associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University and Non-Resident Scholar on Digital Futures at New America.

Her research examines the global power of Big Tech and responsibility attribution in AI governance. She is the author of the award-winning book Hybrid Sovereignty in World Politics and founding director of Purdue’s International Politics and Responsible Tech lab.
