DESCRIPTION:Counted Out shows us the power of math in our society\, our eco
nomy\, and our democracy.\n\nJoin us for a free screening & panel discussi
 on of the film Counted Out.\n\nSeattle University\n\nPigott Auditorium\, P
 igott Building\n\nTuesday\, February 18\, 2025\n\n6:00 to 9:00 p.m.\n\nRef
reshments Provided\n\n \n\nIn our current information economy\, math is ev
erywhere. The people we date\, the news we see\, the influence of our vote
s\, the candidates who win elections\, the education we have access to\, t
he jobs we get—all of it is underwritten by an invisible layer of math t
hat few of us understand\, or even notice.\n\n \n\nBut whether we know it
or not\, our numeric literacy—whether we can speak the language of math
—is a critical determinant of social and economic power. \n\n \n\nIt’s
now more critical than ever to understand how the impact of math runs thr
oughout our electoral process in ways most of us never notice—from gerry
mandered voting districts and AI-created political ads to ballot measures
and candidate choices. \n\n \n\nCounted Out shows us the power of math tha
t undergirds our democracy. Who holds that power? Who doesn’t? And how c
an we all speak the language of math to fully participate in a world that
belongs to everyone?\n\n“Our inability\, as citizens\, to speak the lang
uage that is math is truly risky to us as a society.”\n— Julia Angwin\
 , editor-in-chief of Proof News\n\n \n\nPanelists for this event include:\
n\nTracy Drinkwater\, President and Founder of the Seattle Universal Math
MuseumOnur Bakiner\, Director of the SU Technology Ethics InitiativeFilibe
rto Barajas-López\, UW Associate Professor of Education and Director of t
he Indigenous Education InitiativePaige Wilson\, Center Owner and Manager
of Bellevue Best in Class EducationJelena Pavicevic\, Co-founder and Math
Instructor at Archimedes \n\nCounted Out has been selected to screen at do
zens of film festivals\, including the San Francisco International Film Fe
stival\, and Original Thinkers in Telluride\, Colorado which spotlighted t
he intersection of mathematical thinking and civic health. An election-the
med screening at a KALW public radio on National Voter Registration Day ma
rked the launch of an impact and community screening tour.\n\n \n\nAcross
the country\, we are growing the conversation about the math crisis in Ame
rica whose solution is at our fingertips\, the quality of our lives\, the
future of our society\, and the health of our democracy. And we want you t
o be a part of it. \n\n \n\nWatch the Counted Out trailer and learn more a
