DESCRIPTION:All engaging in acts of care are invited to participate and are
  called to bring the evidence of their care with particular curiosity for 
 the items that are byproducts of loving work. This community art-making ev
 ent will take place in two parts: the first on Saturday May 3\, 2025\, a c
 yanotype workshop to print on fabric squares\; the second on Wednesday\, M
 ay 21\, to gather and bind them into a quilt.  Cyanotype Workshop: Saturda
 y\, May 3 10am-1pm\, Artist Talk 11am Bring artifacts of caregiving. What 
 does care look like to you? What objects do you associate with taking care
  of your loved ones\, yourself? This direct contact process means you’ll
  only see the outlines of opaque materials. Consider forms representing yo
 ur labors of love. Suggestions: accumulated crumbs\; hair pulled from the 
 brush\; dryer lint\; dog leash\; empty medicine containers\; the ridges of
  clean diapers\; breast milk\, formula or whole milk\; bottle parts\; pump
  parts\; soap suds. If you attend the Cyanotype Workshop\, you’ll each b
 e given two pieces of prepared (pre-coated) fabric squares for printing up
 on. One will be selected to bind in a quilt to celebrate the often invisib
 le work of care taking\, fabric made stronger in its gathering. You can re
 turn for our May 21st event to collect your second cyanotype\, and bring h
 ome with you. Hedreen Gallery events are always free for all. REGISTER (at
  the top of this page) to reserve your materials. We have limited capacity
  for the Cyanotype workshop. If your plans change after registering\, plea
 se release your spot for others. Adair Freeman Rutledge will be giving an 
 Artist Talk at 11am\, no registration required to attend. Cyanotype and qu
 ilting materials provided\, no experience necessary.   ------  Under the S
 ame Moon - In becoming a mother\, photographer Adair Freeman Rutledge was 
 fascinated by the repetitive\, almost Sisyphean tasks of care - the trimmi
 ng of fingernails\, the snipping of curls\, the expressing of breast milk 
 - that are often invisible. While in the postpartum period with her own ch
 ildren\, Rutledge collected the byproducts of her days that would otherwis
 e be discarded\; using these artifacts to make cyanotypes\, Prussian blue 
 contact prints and one of the oldest photographic processes\, she reimagin
 es them as beautiful. Adair Freeman Rutledge is a photographic artist base
 d in Seattle\, WA. Originally from Alabama\, her photography work question
 s enduring traditions and underscores tensions between cultural practices 
 and modern realities. Through a curious and feminist lens\, she examines h
 ow American customs influence expectations for our youth\, shape gender ro
 les\, and impact racial stereotypes. Adair’s photography has been commis
 sioned by brands like Amazon\, John Deere\, Brooks Running\, and Zillow. H
 er fine art work has been featured on NPR\, Fraction Magazine\, and Lenscr
 atch\, and is the recipient of numerous awards\, including the Seattle Art
  Museum's Betty Bowen Award (finalist) and the 2024 Do Good Fund Fellowshi
 p. She has exhibited her work at institutions including the Ogden Museum o
 f Southern Art\, the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art\, and Blue Sky Galler
 y.
