It is with sadness that we share the news that former Professor Dr. David Tinius, passed away on Wednesday, March 11, 2026. The Albers School of Business and Economics invites Dr. Tinius' former colleagues, students and friends to join us on Saturday, June 6 to remember the remarkable impact he had on our community. The service will begin at 3 pm in the St. Ignatius Chapel, followed by a reception in the Pigott Building, PACCAR Atrium. 

Dr. David Tinius joined Seattle University in 1971 and was a beloved instructor for thousands of accounting students. He taught courses in management accounting and controllership, with his controllership course serving as a capstone experience for many undergraduate accounting majors. Dr. Tinius was widely admired by students and alumni for his sense of humor, accessibility, deep knowledge of the profession, and unwavering commitment to student success. His research on management controls and accounting history appeared in journals including the Journal of Accountancy, Management Accounting, and Managerial Finance.

Dr. Tinius also made extraordinary contributions through his service to the university and the accounting profession. He served as chair of the Department of Accounting for 18 years between 1977 and 2003, helping position the program for national recognition. During his tenure, he oversaw the development of the Master of Professional Accounting degree and helped raise significant support for accounting students and programs. He played a key role in launching the department’s tax preparation program for low-income community members and helped establish the Northwest Accounting Educators Conference. He also founded the department’s first advisory board, which also was the first advisory board on campus.

Nationally, Dr. Tinius served as president of Beta Alpha Psi and was recognized as an Outstanding Beta Alpha Psi Faculty Advisor. He was also a co-founder of the Pacioli Society, created to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the publication of the first treatise on double-entry bookkeeping by Luca Pacioli.

Gifts in memory of Dr. Tinius can be directed to the David E. Tinius Professorship in Accounting.
