AMERICA’S REAL SISTER ACT: EXCAVATING THE HIDDEN HISTORY OF BLACK CATHOLIC NUNS IN THE UNITED STATES

Join scholar Shannen Dee Williams for an engaging author talk on her groundbreaking book, Subversive Habits: Black Catholic Nuns in the Long African American Freedom Struggle. Williams offers the first full history of these forgotten prophets, revealing how their lives challenge conventional narratives of religious life and justice. Drawing from oral histories and sealed Church records, she uncovers how Black Catholic women, like Sister Mary Antona Ebo, used their faith as an act of resistance against white supremacy. Discover the untold stories of pioneering religious leaders, educators, and activists who reshaped both Catholicism and the civil rights movement.
