Seattle Modern Orchestra Presents Relational Spaces: Immersive Sound
About this Event
2017 Boren Ave, Seattle, WA 98121
https://www.seattlemodernorchestra.org/concert/2025-2026-relational-spaces/SMO returns to Raisbeck Auditorium for an evening of immersive music that explores the interrelated elements of time, spatialized sound, and performer/composer agency. This performance is FREE to Seattle University students, faculty, and staff; the general public can obtain tickets here. The program includes the world premiere of founding director Jérémy Jolley’s (contro-)clessidra I-VI; a series of layered bespoke duos crafted over more than a decade for SMO’s musicians. Focusing on the qualities of relation between the intra- and extra-personal experience, these duos become transformations of one another while interrogating the construction of traditional structure and form. Anahita Abbasi’s Situation VI, a rule-based piece comprised of flexible cells, features room for SMO musicians’ hallmark skills integrating improvisation and extended techniques. It is presented here in a new revised version. Premiered online by SMO in 2021, this is the ensemble’s first live showing of the work. Longtime professor of composition at the Evergreen State College and friend of SMO, Arun Chandra creates a new work for the ensemble that challenges the social and political contexts of music creation and performance. Live and electronic sound is diffused throughout Raisbeck Auditorium’s state-of-the-art Meyer Sound acoustic constellation of speakers in this night of music commissioned by SMO.
